What we ordered:

Small Chocolate Whitser with coconut, and pecans

Small Vanilla Whitser with chocolate chips, cookie dough, and chocolate syrup

Whit's Frozen Custard is a relatively new entrant to the frozen dessert scene here in Jacksonville. We have the been-here-since-forever Dairy Queen, "healthy" newcomer Happy Cup, local favorite Mochi, and easily another half dozen fro-yo places that have made their way in and out of strip malls around town. After countless trips to Whit's we are pretty sure its here to stay (at least we hope). In case you didn't know, custard isn't ice cream...and its not frozen yogurt either. Custard is made with three main ingredients: cream, eggs, and sugar. Whit's custard is higher in butterfat (read: yum), slow-churned to reduce air bubbles, and is served about 10 degrees warmer than ice cream. Whatever it is...we love it.

Whit's features a new flavor each day that are custom blended and are always made fresh daily. On a giant wall inside Whit's is their "Flavor Calendar", where they list each of the selected flavors for the rest of the month. As each day passes and each flavor runs out, they erase the flavor, so we make sure we go the first day of each month; so you know, we can take the picture. The worst is when you walk in on a day you've been looking forward to, and the flavor's already erased...they're already out.

Even on day's when the flavors something a little out-there - like pineapple upside-down cake - you can still go in and try it out. But rest assured, you're not stuck eating some weird flavor, they have plenty of other options on the menu. You can get the flavor of the day, chocolate, or vanilla in a cup, or a sugar or waffle cone. You can get the flavor of the day, chocolate, or vanilla mixed in with you favorite toppings - or what they call, a "Whitser". You can get the flavor of the day, chocolate, or vanilla in a shake. You can even get a hot dog or a taco, because, why not?

MK and I though, we've narrowed down our favorites. MK loves the chocolate custard whitzer with pecans and coconut. She loves coconut. I don't; it tastes like paper. I'm a much more boring dude when it comes to almost everything. I almost always get a vanilla whitzer with chocolate chips, cookie dough, and chocolate syrup; because chocolate chip cookie dough is the bomb.

Whit's is always a good stop after dinner. Or before dinner. Or for dinner. I mean its good guys - for real. Rain or shine, hot or cold, its always a good time for Whit's. If anyone tries one of their hot dogs though, let me know. Stop by and try the flavor of the day. Then go wild! Mix in a ton of things, like whole strawberries, gummi worms, coconut (paper), or like anything else (there's a ton of toppings). Happy Whitsering!

-PS if you go to the Atlantic Beach location and you see us, feel free to join us on the bench! Just don't take our spot. Its ours.

MK+A DINING TIPS FOR YOU

#1

Always tip well, especially for exceptional service. At the very least, make up for that jerk across the restaurant who keeps sending his food back.

#2

Don't be afraid to sit at the bar! Be social! And watching the chef's and bartenders can be fun. Plus, you get to skip the wait.

#3

Order desert. There's always room for desert. Desert doesn't go to the stomach, it goes to the heart.
