Metro Diner is a local establishment in Jacksonville with several locations. Since we live down at the beach, we mostly make it out to the Beaches location. With a home-y diner feel, and long lines on the weekend, its easy to see why people love this place. Oh, and the food isn't bad either...

This wasn't our first trip to Metro, so we've already gotten the chance to try a few things out. That being said, there's a good reason we keep coming back - in fact, there's several. Choosing between some of the best chicken and waffles, over-the-top breakfast pizza, the meatlover's meatlover's omlette, croissant french toast, and always amazing eggs is no easy task.

This week, MK and I decided to split two meals between us; one of our favorite things to do - after all, who doesn't want a lil' of both?! We split the croissant french toast, and the three egg breakfast (that we turn into 5-eggs...because...well, eggs). MK likes her eggs over-medium, and I like them scrambled, so we get a side of over-medium. This week they were cooked to perfection with still-runny yolks still inside! My scrambled eggs were great as usual. You would think that every diner should have good scrambled eggs down to a science - but thats just not the case unfortunately. The hash-browns weren't quite as crispy as we would have liked, but it was probably a happy medium between the near-burnt crisp I like them cooked to, and the more tame style MK likes. The toast was, well toast. If they mess that up...I mean, come on.

Now for the good stuff, the main course: croissant french toast. I'm not sure whose idea it was to throw the "normal bread" in the trash and dip two sliced croissants in egg and fry them to perfection...but they deserve a good hug and a day off to just sit and enjoy more crossaint french toast because its amazing. MK's pretty sure the croissants come from local bakery Cinotti's, but I always question if they fell from heaven. We've yet to order this amazing gift from above and have it prepared poorly. It's always still flakey and crisp on the outside and the perfect soft texture you'd expect from good french toast on the inside. Douse this sucker in maple syrup and you're just about ready for a nap. Man, its good.

The service is always super friendly, and they usually do a good job of keeping your coffee full (and almost always crazy-hot, so sip with caution). Both diners are locally owned, and they really keep the family feel going inside. If anything goes wrong, a manager (or a lot of times, the owner) is quick to come over and make it right.

So, next time you're in Jacksonville and get a sweet tooth that needs fixing, head over to Metro Diner and they'll get you fixed up quick!

MK+A DINING TIPS FOR YOU

#1

Always tip well, especially for exceptional service. At the very least, make up for that jerk across the restaurant who keeps sending his food back.

#2

Don't be afraid to sit at the bar! Be social! And watching the chef's and bartenders can be fun. Plus, you get to skip the wait.

#3

Order desert. There's always room for desert. Desert doesn't go to the stomach, it goes to the heart.
